We all know about the wine glut – except for French Bordeaux there is too much wine – oxymoron fine but wine brokers can barely give the stuff away if the wine is not a top shelf name. Many of the smaller California vineyards are selling cheap cheap cheap. Also, if you like to dig a little, finding older wines that supposedly did not have a long shelf life but were well preserved can yield great rewards, and you will get some duds this way too. I have found wine that I thought would be salad dressing that were surprising. Try the small vineyard thing; try to find a lot of some wines that are “over the hill” and I guarantee you will have fun and it will be interesting too. When I have to have a guarantee, I reach up and pop the thoroughbreds; otherwise, I like the hunt.
